Regional takes track and field banner for 10th year

Last Wednesday was a day filled with athleticism and success for a number of area track and field athletes, with St. Paul Regional High School again coming out on top of all the other participating schools in the division.

2010 marks the 10th year in a row that Regional claims the St. Paul Athletics Association senior high track and field banner. Last year was an outstanding year for the school, as students also managed to capture their seventh zone championship and first ever provincial championship in track and field.

“We’re excited,” says one of the school’s track and field coaches Hank Smid, who adds that he’s very happy with the school’s program and the response he’s received from students. Out of the 45 kids competing for Regional last week, 41 of those students will be advancing to zones on May 26 in Fort McMurray.

After zones are done, the top two athletes in each category with then move on to provincials. And although Smid admits that last year’s provincial championship is something he would like to repeat, he knows that it will be tough.

“It was a bit of a surprise last year,” says Smid. He adds that when Regional won provincials last year, it probably gave hope to many other schools that it is possible for them to take home a championship.

A couple of Regional High School students also broke some records on Wednesday. Eric Laramee set a new Boys U16 triple jump record with a distance of 12.25m and Claude Cote set a new Boys U19 400 metre dash record with a time of 52.59 sec.

But, other schools also achieved some big accomplishments, including Kirk Sundt from École Mallaig School who managed to break two records in the running events. Sundt set a Boys U19 record in the 1,500 metre run with a time of 4:33.0 and also set a new record in the 3,000 metre run with a time of 10:05.28.

“I didn't actually expect to beat the record for the 1,500m, so that was a really nice surprise after I finished the race,” says Sundt, adding, “The 3,000m (race) is the one that I train the most for, so I pushed really hard to beat that record, and my coach was at the finish line telling me how fast I had to do each lap to break it, so it was a big accomplishment for me.”

Sundt admits that coming into track season, he didn’t really expect to do that well. With a few missed practices due to the colder spring weather earlier in the month, Sundt was happy that he took the initiative to stay in shape over the winter months.

He says that all of the seven athletes who competed from Mallaig School tried their hardest to represent their school as best they could. This was apparent also in Marc Dubeau who also set a new record.

Dubeau broke the Boys U16 discus throw record with a distance of 36.66m. Watching Dubeau throw the discus, it was obvious that he had an advantage over the rest of the competing boys.

Glendon School also managed to put their name in the record books thanks to Alanna Gagne who broke the Girls U16 3,000 metre run record, setting a new time of 12:52.91.
