Golfers from around the region will be in Lac La Biche on Thursday for the second annual Region One Aboriginal Business Association Golf Tournament. Even though it’ s a fledgling event, the event has managed to attract a full field of golfers for the second year in a row.
Participants will start the day with breakfast before hitting the course at the Lac La Biche Golf and Country Club for a shotgun start, where several of the event’ s sponsors will be set up around the course with food, drinks, and prizes to be won, including a few chances to win a car or side-by-side ATV for a hole in one. Local NHLer Rene Bourque also donated several youth golf lesson vouchers as a prize to be won. Brenda Bourque-Stratichuk, one of the tournament’ s organizers, said she was pleased with the response to the tournament from the community, and glad that sponsors, both large and small, decided to contribute to the event despite the tough economic climate.
“I think the response has been exceptional,” she said. “Even though there’ s a downturn in the economy, we still have support from industry... so I think those kinds of things have been a plus for us.”
Some of the money raised by the event goes towards keeping ROABA’ s office in Lac La Biche open, but the rest is divvied up between local organizations. This year, the local 4H club and Girl Guides will receive donations from ROABA.
“We also will share proceeds with 4H and Girl Guides,” said Bourque-Stratichuk. “We asked our guys, ‘who do you volunteer with or work with?’ , and they brought those names forward.”
The event gets underway at 9 am starting with breakfast, before golfers head out for a shotgun start to tee off at 10:30. After the round, dinner will be served at 4 pm.
