The Saddle Lake Warriors hosted three home games in the past two weeks, including the team’s first win of the season on Oct. 17, against the newly organized Frog Lake T-Birds.

The Vegreville Rangers also travelled to Saddle Lake on Oct. 12 for a matchup with the Warriors. In this game, it was all Vegreville in the first, as the visiting team was able to net two unanswered goals in the opening period.

Saddle Lake, for their part, scored two unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the second. Kevin Krengnatak scored the first, assisted by Layne Hunter and Tyler Haineault. Saddle Lake’s Preston Sparklingeyes netted the next goal of the game, with Lyndon Bird and Tyler Haineault getting credit for the assist.

Vegreville, though, found the scoreboard three more times in the frame, earning themselves a 5-2 lead after two periods of play.

Saddle Lake scored a power play goal early in the third, bringing the score a little closer. Tyler Haineault was credited with the goal, assisted by Silas Makokis. It would, however, prove to be the only scoring of the period by either team. The final score was 5-3 in favour of the visiting Rangers.

The Warriors hosted another home game on Oct. 17, this time versus the Frog Lake T-Birds.

The packed home crowd was treated to a Saddle Lake goal early in the contest, as Silas Makokis netted an unassisted score a mere 36 seconds in to the game. His teammate, Braedin Makokis McGilvery, soon added another one, giving the home team a 2-0 lead after the first.

The rest of the game saw an explosion of scoring, as the two teams combined for 10 more goals. Ron Janvier, Braedin Makokis McGilvery, and Kevin Krengnektak all recorded goals for the Warriors in the second. Frog Lake netted two of its own, including a late-period score with less than a minute on the clock. The score was 5-2 for the Warriors after two.

Frog Lake led things off in the third, scoring two unanswered goals to start the frame. Makokis answered with a Warriors goal at the 13:22 mark, and then Preston Sparklingeyes increased the Warriors lead with another goal. Frog Lake netted another late one, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Warriors, who came away with a 7-5 win, marking their first victory of the year.

The Warriors played yet another home game on Oct. 19 versus the Vermilion Tigers. They ended up losing the contest by a score of 4-3. Representatives from the Warriors were unavailable for comment by the Journal’s press deadline.
