When Lakeland Rustlers basketball head coach Peter Sambu comes to Bonnyville for the Rustlers Basketball Camp later this month, he might have a few new tricks up his sleeve to teach the camp's attendees.
Sambu will be attending a basketball clinic with West Virginia University's basketball head coach Bobby Huggins prior to the camp in Bonnyville and he may come armed to the Centennial Centre with a bunch of new tricks and drills up his sleeve for the camp's attendees.
“Anytime you get invited to learn something from one of the best basketball coaches in the country, it's a good thing,” Sambu said. “I hope to use some of what I learn there and bring a high level of coaching to the Rustlers and this camp in Bonnyville.”
The camp, which runs from July 26 to 29, will help kids in Bonnyville who are looking to learn and develop their game, Sambu said.
“We're working on skill development, individual fundamentals and then transferring those skills into game situations,” he said. “Kids will learn not only how to master the crossover dribble but also tools of life.”
Sambu also admitted that the camp also gives him an opportunity to scout some of Bonnyville's talent, noting that an impressive player from the camp, with a lot of hard work, could land a spot on the Rustlers one day.
This will be the first time for Sambu to run the camp, as Rustlers women's head coach Kris King was in charge last year. According to Sambu, there won't be a whole lot of changes to the format of the camp but he did say to expect a number of surprises and a lot of fun.
“I hope that the kids are excited for the camp and I greatly look forward to working with them,” he added.
The cost of the camp is $199 and includes a basketball jersey. Both girls and boys are welcome to join and there are still a number of spots available.
