The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Racing Association held its second annual Choko Pro Racing Series in St. Paul on Feb. 8, a snowmobile drag racing event, hosted by the St. Paul Trailblazers.
The SSRA is an International Snowmobile Racing sanctioned team that holds races across western Canada, and on Feb. 8, 100 thrill seekers showed up revving their engines, ready to hit the drag track. Of the 100, roughly a dozen were local riders.
“We as a club are very happy with the overall outcome of the second annual Trailblazers sled drags. It's our second year doing this event and we have learned a lot in the past and tried hard to improve all aspects of the event,” said Race Director Dan Blain with the St. Paul Trailblazers, adding a good amount of spectators were on hand despite the frigid temperatures. “We were better set-up this year for the cooler temperatures, and I know many of the spectators were thankful.”
Blain added the event featured a wide variety of race categories, ranging from age group to machine class.
“These races consist of pro-level race teams all the way down to amateur local racers and even the youth 120cc class for kids as young as five years old,” said Blain, adding youngsters Jayden Blain, Danica Blain, Warren Vance, Zach Foisy and Brook Foisy all took part in the 120cc race. “This year we ran one heat of 120cc sleds which are designed for the younger riders. We had a total of five entries ranging in age from five to 11 years of age and they all did really well.”
Following the 120cc race, Blain hit the track alongside Trailblazers President Danny Smyl, Vice President Luc Gascon, and race committee member Gil Blain for a quirky race on the tiny machines.
“Once our 120cc racers completed their run we ran an executive race where four executives from (the Trailblazers) raced the little kids’ 120cc sleds for fun, and a little entertainment for the spectators,” he said.
Blain thanked the many members of the community who came together to help make this event a success.
“A huge thank you to all my club and committee members who give tirelessly to help make these events possible in St. Paul,” said Blain, adding a number of local businesses helped sponsor the event. “Without great people and great local business support, events like this couldn't be possible. I am very thankful to live and raise a family in a community like this.”
