Soccer teams shine at Lakeland Cup

The results of two weekends worth of soccer in the Lakeland will see a number of teams head to provincials in July.

LAKELAND - Over the past two weekends, soccer teams from across the Lakeland District Soccer region have been battling it out on the pitch, earning medals and berths at provincial competitions. 

The U15 and U19 division soccer teams participated in the first weekend of the outdoor Lakeland Cup in Cold Lake, from June 17-19.  

In the U19 division, the St. Paul Boys team finished in first place and the Vermilion Boys team earned silver medals. The coed team made up of Bonnyville, Cold Lake and Lac La Biche players finished the weekend with bronze medals.  

The St. Paul Boys team will be representing the Lakeland District at the Alberta Soccer Provincials in July.  

U15 boys and girls 

Taking gold medals and a spot to represent the Lakeland District at Alberta Soccer Provincials for the U15 Girls division is the Bonnyville-Lac La Biche Girls team.  

The St. Paul Girls team took second place at the outdoor tournament, while the Vermilion girls' team took home bronze medals.  

Also competing in Lakeland Cup was the Vegreville girls' team.  

Earning a spot at Provincials in July and a first-place finish in Cold Lake was the U15 Bonnyville-Lac La Biche boys’ team.  

Coming in second place was the coed U15 Cold Lake team with the Vegreville boys finishing in third place.  

The St. Paul boys team finished in fourth place, while the Vermilion boys team finished fifth in the tournament.  

U13 boys and girls 

From June 24-26, the U13 and U17 division teams battled for a provincial spot at the second weekend of the Lakeland Cup outdoor tournament, held in Vegreville.  

On the U13 boys’ side, the Bonnyville-Lac La Biche team took first place and earned a spot at provincials. In second place was the coed team from Cold Lake, and in third was St. Paul United. Vegreville also took part in the U13 boys' tournament. 

For the U13 girls’ side, Vegreville won gold and a spot at provincials, Bonnyville-Lac La Biche won silver, and the St. Paul girls’ team won bronze.  

U17 

For the U17 division, the Vegreville girls won gold and earned a spot at provincials too.  

The Bonnyville-Lac La Biche girls took silver, and the Cold Lake girls won bronze. A team from Vermilion also competed in the U17 girls’ category.
