Voyageurs drop weekend opener to Ooks in double OT

Voyageurs fight back, but lose in extra frames to NAIT - Game 2 goes Saturday night in Edmonton

It took double overtime to decide a winner in Friday night's tilt between the NAIT Ooks and the Portage College Voyageurs.

In the end, the Ooks came out on top with a 4-3 victory in the first of two home and home hockey matchups between the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference teams.

Despite the loss, the Voyageurs rallied through the game, first overcoming a two goal deficit on two early powerplay goals by the Ooks, and then boosting their shots on net throughout the game. After managing only 12 in the first period, the Voyageurs finished the game with 44 shots on the NAIT netminder. The Ooks returned fire with 38 shots on Portage's Alex Broussueau, including the eventual game winner a minute and 25 seconds into the second five-minute overtime period.

Penalties continue to be an issue for the Portage team. The Voyageurs were served nine penalties in the game, including a third-period 10-minute misconduct to forward Thomas Colter. Officials sent just three Ooks to the sin-bin for minors.

Friday's overtime loss puts the Voyageurs into a tie with Conordia for six-place in the seven- team ACAC with two points overall. The win keeps the Ooks in fourth place overall with five points.

The two teams play again Saturday night in Edmonton. The puck drops at 6 pm. The game is simulcast on ACACTV.
