After a win against the Killam Wheat Kings and a loss to the Wainwright Bisons in away games on Friday and Saturday, The Saddle Lake Warriors claimed another victory in Sunday’s game.
Playing Killam again, on Jan. 26 in their home arena, Saddle Lake held a steady lead throughout the game, not letting up the pressure, with fast offensive and steady defensive plays.
Saddle Lake’s lead began early, in the first five minutes the first period, with Braedin Makokis scoring on an assist from Tyson Maton, and Tyler Haineault.
Saddle Lake kept up the pressure, with Silas Makokis scoring within the last 8 minutes, and Dylon Maton scoring on an assist from Dallas Desjarlais, with one second left in the first.
Saddle Lake’s early goals set precedence for the rest of the game, leaving Killam struggling to keep up with their aggressive plays, scoring a single goal each period. After Killam scored their third and last goal by about halfway through the third, Saddle Lake took the game with another goal near the end of the period, winning 6 – 3.
“We had a solid team game against Killam on Friday, and on Saturday we played Wainwright. We played them hard, but we ran out of gas,” said Assistant Coach Dallas Jackson, about Saddle Lake’s games over the weekend.
Jackson continued saying, “To be honest, our inconsistency has to do with not having our full lineup. We went into some games with only 10 to 12 of our guys and that can make things difficult.”
Jackson described Saddle Lake as “coming out hitting,” also saying, “We played a game with a lot of speed, and I think our boys are aware Killam will be their first opponent if the standings stay this way. So we have to play them every time like it’s a playoff game. Once the playoffs come around we hope to be out with our full lineup, and a force to be reckoned with.”
“The boys were playing hard, it went good. We were playing an energetic game tonight,” said Braedin Makokis, with the Warriors.
“We wanted to keep a streak going and beat those guys like we did on Friday. The boys were fine tonight, despite missing some D-men tonight. We hope to have the full lineup in the playoffs, with the starting tendy,” he added.
