Young goalies learn from Jr. A Pontiacs

The Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs hosted a goalie clinic on Jan. 7 at the RJ Lalonde Arena, giving minor hockey goalies an hour of ice time with the team.

Goaltenders of all different ages were out on the ice with the team and received pointers from Pontiacs goaltenders Josh Erickson and Stephen Klein.

“We stuck to the basics,” said Klein. “I taught them about rebound control, using your stick and making sure you are square to the shooter. I just tried to keep it really simple and something that everyone could focus on.”

Morgan Murray, a goaltender who participated in the clinic thought it was “really cool” to be on the ice with the Pontiacs players.

“They taught me how to lean on my posts and to lead with my stick instead of my blocker, said Murray. “Their shots were definitely harder and a little trickier. “

Klein also took the goalies through a small screening drill.

“We had a little screening drill. I wanted to make sure they knew what side of the guy to look around so that they always get good sight of the puck,” said Klein.

Murray enjoyed the clinic saying, “I hope they do it again next year.”

Klein, who has been a part of it for the past two seasons, really enjoys the change of pace.

“I have done some teaching in the past with some younger kids. It is a blast. It is a lot of fun being out there and being able to shoot pucks,” said Klein. “It is something I like doing. It is always good to get involved and give some kids a few pointers that maybe they don't get elsewhere.”
