Over 100 youth soccer players will converge on the Bold Center this weekend for the Lakeland Cup. The youth indoor soccer tournament runs from Feb. 22-23 and involves 14 mixed-gender teams in U12, U14, U16 and U18 brackets from Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Wainwright and Lac La Biche.
Over 100 youth soccer players will converge on the Bold Center this weekend for the Lakeland Cup.
The youth indoor soccer tournament runs from Feb. 22-23 and involves 14 boys, girls and mixed teams in U12, U14, U16 and U18 brackets from Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Wainwright and Lac La Biche.
"It gives the community to represent the Lakelands at provincials in Alberta," said Scott Clarke, president of Lakeland District Soccer.
It's the second straight year the tournament has been held in Lac La Biche, after it was moved to the Bold Center last minute due to problems with planned hosts in Bonnyville.
The event is also a day trip for parents that attend, according to Clarke.
"Most of the parents shuttle their kids to the game and just stick around," Clarke said. "They're shuttling from Bonnyville, Cold Lake or Wainright, they're going to stick around for pretty much the whole day."
Last year, the Bonnyville girls team won the U14 provincials. Bonnyville also leads the U18 table over the course of the regular season, with Lac La Biche's team in last.
The tournament will operate as a round-robin with the U14s finishing up Saturday and the U12, U16 and U18 teams wrapping up Sunday.
