THE PAS — An out-of-control wildfire burning west of Lake Winnipeg has forced residents to flee from several communities in northern Manitoba.
The Rural Municipality of Kelsey says Rocky Lake East Shore, Rocky Lake North Shore, Wanless and the Carrot Valley along Highway 283 were evacuated on Thursday.
A social media post says residents leaving their homes are to register for support at the Wescana Inn Rendezvous Room in The Pas.
The Manitoba government says the fire is estimated at 66 square kilometres.
The municipality says the wildfire could compromise its water treatment plant, so residents who aren't evacuated are to fill water jugs and prepare for a possible boil water advisory.
Officials from The Pas say high winds and dry conditions are creating challenging work to bring the fire under control.
