Islanders squeeze past Eagles with late push in QMJHL action

CHARLOTTETOWN — Cole Huckins scored the go-ahead goal with 54 seconds remaining in the third period and the Charlottetown Islanders topped the Cape Breton Eagles 4-2 on Tuesday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Simon Hughes, Giovanni Morneau and Michael Horth, with an empty-net goal, added the others for Charlottetown (10-10-0). Aksels Ozols made 30 saves.

Luke Patterson and Cam Squires replied for Cape Breton (11-11-0). Jakub Milota stopped 29-of-32 shots.

Having entered the third period down 2-1, Squires scored to knot the contest with 1:36 left in the final frame for the Eagles.

But Huckins's marker 42 seconds later restored the Islanders' edge, followed by Horth's 17th of the season sealing the victory with 26 seconds remaining.
