Titan unable to stop Islanders potent offence, trail series 2-0

CHARLOTTETOWN — The Charlottetown Islanders showed no mercy in sweeping the Moncton Wildcats in the opening round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.

And the Isles haven't lifted their foot off the gas against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in round two.

Charlottetown took a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-five quarterfinal series on Monday by thumping the visiting Titan 5-1 at the Eastlink Centre.

Brett Budgell and Patrick Guay each scored twice for the Islanders -- who won Sunday's opener 4-1 -- with a single added by Zachary Roy.

Ben Allison's power-play goal with under six minutes left in the game was the lone Titan marker. The Islanders outshot the Titan 31-30.

Game 3 is Thursday in Bathurst.

Elsewhere, the Sherbrooke Phoenix took a 2-0 series lead with a 4-1 win at home against the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.

Xavier Parent, Maxime Blanchard, Israel Mianscum and Stephane Jr. Huard scored for the Phoenix, who won Sunday's first game 3-1. Alexis Bourque scored for the Armada, who will host Game 3 on Thursday.

After needing overtime in Game 1 to win 6-5, the Shawinigan Cataractes tightened up defensively to register a 3-1 road win over the Gatineau Olympiques.

Daniel Agostino, Olivier Nadeau and Mavrik Bourque scored for Shawinigan, while Simon Pinard replied for the Olympiques. Game 3 will be played Thursday in Shawinigan.

And the visiting Rimouski Oceanic battled back from a 4-0 loss in Game 1 to defeat the Quebec Remparts 4-1 on Monday.

Alex Drover scored twice for the winners, while Alexandre Blais and Mael St-Denis chipped in with singles. James Malatesta scored for the Remparts. Game 3 is Thursday in Rimouski.
