WHL roundup: Rebels lose first of season to equally hot ICE

WINNIPEG — Billed as a matchup of the Western Hockey League's top heavyweights, the Winnipeg ICE knocked off the Red Deer Rebels 3-1 on Tuesday night at Wayne Fleming Arena.

The Rebels, entering the game listed No. 1 in the Canadian Hockey League's top 10 rankings, were rolling with a 15-0 record. The ICE, listed No. 3 in the same rankings, were 15-1 heading into the showdown.

Ben Zloty, Skyler Bruce and Matthew Savoie scored for the ICE, who outshot the visitors 29-21.

Carson Birnie scored the Rebels' lone goal at 12:52 of the third period.

MOOSE JAW, SASK. — Maximus Wanner scored twice as the Moose Jaw Warriors downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-2.

Denton Mateychuk, Atley Calvert, Nathan Pilling, Jagger Firkus and Brayden Yager also scored for the Warriors (10-6-0-0).

Jaxsen Wiebe scored twice for the Oil Kings (2-13-1-0).

MEDICINE HAT, ALTA. — The Prince Albert Raiders spotted the Medicine Hat Tigers the first goal, then stormed back with three unanswered markers to record a 3-1 road win.

Sloan Stanick, Hayden Pakkala and Carson Latimer scored third-period goals for the Raiders (5-11-2-0), who were outshot 34-28.

Tyler MacKenzie scored early in the third period for the Tigers (4-9-3-0).
