A busy Mother's Day

Although Mother’s Day in our home is always pretty low-key, I feel like this year’s Mother’s Day weekend was filled with more sickness and work than past years. My weekend began earlier than anticipated on Friday afternoon.

Although Mother’s Day in our home is always pretty low-key, I feel like this year’s Mother’s Day weekend was filled with more sickness and work than past years.

My weekend began earlier than anticipated on Friday afternoon. After working a quick half-day in the morning, I returned home to a fevered six-year-old and a grumpy two-year-old, only to start feeling rather tired myself. I took the opportunity of having a short work day to try to relax on the couch as the boys had finally calmed down for a few minutes.

Soon after, family from Fort McMurray arrived for the weekend and there was no keeping a two-year-old calm with familiar visitors nearby. Thankfully, the evening came to a quiet close with both boys sleeping soundly before 9 p.m.

Saturday was a day filled with work as I had set aside the day for some Mother’s Day photo sessions. As I prepared to head into my “studio” in the basement or the day, my husband left the house to go golfing, making me feel a little like maybe we had bypassed Mother’s Day weekend and headed straight into June for Father’s Day.

Thankfully, taking photos is enjoyable for me, and doesn’t technically feel like work, granted it was still a tiring day. That evening, we had a house full of family, which again was certainly enjoyable, but with a two-year-old who went from being grumpy to also having a fever, I have to admit it was relieving when everyone was again sleeping soundly in their beds.

Sunday morning was again filled with family, this time at my in-laws, and after a nice breakfast, I headed to a couple area greenhouses with my parents, leaving my two sick babies at home with their daddy.

After coming home, I attempted a bit of work at the computer, only to be continually disrupted by the still somewhat sick two-year-old and six-year-old. I then attempted a walk with the two-year-old, quickly returning home as the storm clouds rolled in and a surprise wind storm caused a bit of chaos.

A supper made up of leftovers and canned soup rounded off the night, and when the sick kids were again sleeping soundly in their beds, I headed back to my computer to attempt some work. At this point, my focus level was pretty nonexistent, and I now realize after writing this column that my Mother’s Day was pretty typical of what a Mother’s Day should be. It included pretty much everything being a mother regularly entails – work, chaos, sometimes grumpy and sick kids, but more importantly it also had family, a few moments of peace, and a loving home to spend it at.
