Dear Editor,
Democracy in Alberta?
A government system is not a true democracy when a government can make any law, regulation, do anything it wants to without regard to what its citizens believe, think or need. That again is the Alberta of today.
For three years, Alberta had an opposition party that was able to challenge the PC government, brought down Premier Redford, and stalled the government in many of its policies and practices that were hurtful to Albertans. The PC government felt forced to reverse many of its earlier decisions in the face of opposition persistence.
But what now that two thirds of the Wildrose MLAs were enticed to join the PCs?
My prediction is that from now until after the upcoming election, the PCs will tread softly, talk about democracy, tell us why they are so great, and if you love Alberta you must vote for them. Then - ouch. Their song will be much different should they return as government without facing a strong opposition party.
