While sitting in +30 degrees Celsius heat, a cool breeze finally coming through the window after the sun has been down for a good hour, I realized that the one topic on everyone’s minds right now (if they’re awake and not sleeping) is the weather.
I suppose we do live in Canada, and the weather is one topic that never goes away. Whether it’s the +30 degree heat wave or -40 degrees cold snap, we always have something to say about the weather.
Personally, I love living in a country with four distinct seasons as each season has something special about it.
In the winter, I often check the forecast, and often find myself yearning for a great blizzard to give me an excuse to stay in the house all snug and warm. In the spring, after a few too many months of cold and snow, I think we all feel at least a bit of relief as the mercury rises and the puddles start drying up and flip flops start coming out.
In the summer, there are two things I look forward to – a good heat wave, and some great thunderstorms. Now, I’m not crazy about tornadoes and the nasty things that can come along with thunderstorms, but there is still something magical about them that I just love.
To me, +28 (even +30) is the ideal temperature, and since we usually only have about five days a year in that range, I adore it when it happens. My husband on the other hand, doesn’t fare so well.
On these hot days, he often curses the fact that we decided to install a gas fireplace when we built our home, instead of air conditioning. I, on the other hand, feel it’s a much better investment to have the fireplace that we use nearly every day from October to April (and sometimes on cool, rainy summer days in between) rather than an air conditioner I would only turn on a handful of times through the year.
Social media is a great way to know what the weather is like in the surrounding area, and I often come across conversations about how it hailed in Mallaig, poured rain in St. Lina and Stoney Lake, with not one rain drop felt in between.
This week’s forecast is predicting some warm summer temperatures, and I’m sure by the end of the week, even I will be happy when it gets back down to +20. But for now, I’m basking in the heat and loving every minute of it, even if it makes writing and thinking a bit harder and I have to put up with a slightly cranky husband.
On the plus side, I had a rather quiet household this evening and a baby in bed a couple hours earlier than usual due to the heat. I also got the opportunity to get a nice tan and no one expects meals to be made in the same way since turning on the oven when it’s +30 also makes my husband cringe.
I was reading some tips on how to deal with a heat wave and one tip was to rest often, so I might take advantage of that this week and enjoy the summer a bit more than usual.
