Bonnyville firefighters find new ways to help

The Bonnyville Fire Department proved once again why it is an integral part of the community and contributes in so many more ways than just the emergency responding it does so well.

The Bonnyville Fire Department proved once again why it is an integral part of the community and contributes in so many more ways than just the emergency responding it does so well.

Last Tuesday, a handful of firefighters spent the evening at Franchere Bay and Moose Lake Provincial parks sharing fire safety tips and advice with campers, particularly the up-and-coming generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

Not only is it important to reach out to families with fire safety advice, but it is crucial to teach the next generation the importance of fire safety and just being safe in general.

As Bonnyville Fire Chief Darryl Shyian said, with awareness up, not only are people staying safe, but it makes the difficult job of firefighters and emergency responders just a little easier.

“What we are looking for is to get the awareness up. In the event they are calling 911 these are the services that will be coming out, this is our capability. We are just going to share some information with them on how to be safe and then hopefully they don't have to call us to come out,” said Shyian, while at Franchere Bay last Tuesday.

With their young minds full of new safety advice, the firefighters then gave the kids a tour of the fire trucks, let them spray the hoses and gave out prizes.

Hats off to the men and women who make the Bonnyville Fire Department a cornerstone of the community.
