It seems as though the season of crisp air, crunching leaves, and even more unpredictable than usual Alberta weather is officially upon us.
It’s the time of year when you leave the house dressed in multiple layers, only to peel at least half those layers away throughout the day, as you work up a sweat and get either a slight sunburn or windburn, depending on the day, as you play with the air conditioning and heater within the same 10-minute drive.
One of my favourite parts about the cooling temperatures is wearing boots. I may have an unhealthy attachment to my comfortable, furry, beautiful boots, so much that I actually tried to hunt down a more summer appropriate version, but to no avail. I had to resort to wearing more appropriate attire, like flip-flops and ballet flats.
Now that the temperature has dropped back down, I’ve already taken my boots out of storage. I may have looked a little silly the other day though, because although the morning was a crisp five degrees, by the time I was bringing my son to his karate class after a busy day at work, it was +20, and I was still wearing my winter boots.
Thankfully, I wasn’t really that uncomfortable. I am one of those people who are nearly always cold.
With fall comes what is probably the busiest time of the year (and a good excuse to be wearing comfortable boots all day long). School has started, and routine is slowly making its way back into our family life. But, I’m not sure if I’m really that excited about the routine and structure that fall brings with it.
After-school activities have also started up, and I sometimes find it hard to remember if I’m supposed to be at karate class or gymnastics, and soon I will have to add guitar lessons and pond hockey into that equation.
It also happens to be one of the busiest times of the year for my own personal business, making some days rather long, and for the last few days, both my sons have repeatedly asked me why I have to work so much.
I keep telling myself things will slow down – and I’m sure they will – but it seems like every year when November rolls around, I’m always in need of a brief holidays… only to realize that there is no time to take a holiday with Christmas right around the corner.
This year is also unique in that we are in the middle of building a house. We are hoping to have our project wrapped up by early 2016, but I’m still going to hold out a little hope that I might be able to enjoy some of the Christmas rush in my own home.
As stressful as the fall season might feel at times, I think I might thrive on it. Keeping busy keeps me happy, and warm, furry boots do too.
