Christmas can wait

Now that Halloween is over, the cobwebs have been swept, the decorations cleared from lawns, everyone is readily anticipating the next upcoming holiday: Christmas.

But before you start clambering onto the roof and stringing up lights for Santa’s big arrival, remember there’s another important day that falls between Oct. 31 and Dec. 25.

I’m talking about Remembrance Day.

In our household, not a single decoration comes out of storage before Nov. 11.

I’m a firm believer that Christmas can, and should, wait until after Remembrance Day.

This is out of respect for our former and currently serving members of the Canadian forces.

The window between Halloween and Nov. 12 is a time of reflection.

We should be grateful for the sacrifices these men and women make each and every day, but especially on the days leading up to Nov. 11.

So please, just hold off on Christmas. Even if it’s just days after the ceremony.

It’s out of respect for those protecting our country, our communities, and our families.
