Christmas is coming earlier and earlier

Is it just me or does the Christmas season seem to starting earlier and earlier every year? It is the middle of November and many people around town have already had their Christmas lights up for weeks, Santa Claus has already made an appearance in many towns and cities across the country and stores are already starting to play Christmas music!

It is the middle of November and many people around town have already had their Christmas lights up for weeks, Santa Claus has already made an appearance in many towns and cities across the country and stores are already starting to play Christmas music!

Now I am not a Christmas hater. I love Christmas and the holiday season. I just like it at the proper time.

I feel that we shouldn't be seeing Christmas decorations and music until at least December 1st. Heck we already celebrate Christmas with music and lights and a jolly man in a suit for a month, why does it need to turn into months?

What other holiday gets this long of a lead up? None. Not a single one sees this crazy prolonged lead up.

Now if you agree with the ever-extending Christmas season, would you also be open to the idea of having the Easter bunny appear in February? The fella can then toss eggs around and bring the joys of Easter for two whole months!

Heck why stop there. Lets start decorating for Halloween in August! And Canada Day, why do we just have to celebrate it on one day? Lets stretch that out as well and spend June, maybe even parts of May partying for Canada's birthday. It will work out great for me, because my birthday is at the end of July. I might as well take June and July to celebrate my birthday, decorate my place and play party tunes for weeks on end.

Now I know most of this sounds ridiculous! But to me it is just as ridiculous as seeing Christmas themed things arriving at in September and carrying on for months. At the most the Christmas season is December.

After a quick search online I found I am not alone in my opinion. Most people commenting in online forums seemed unpleasant towards the idea of being bombarded with advertising and decorations for two months every year in preparation for a single day.

The event is being pushed and extended more and more by the retail outlets, who want to entice consumers to spend more money over a longer period of time. Then, once the stores turn on their music and bust out the decorations, some wise person decided that Santa Claus and his wonderful parade should come weeks earlier.

I for one don't need to see Santa walking around in November. The jolly man should be kept to one month of the year.

As for the retail side of things, we have too many eager shoppers to blame for that. I have quite a number of friends, who year after year, will start their holiday shopping earlier and earlier. Hey, guess what. You might be saving yourself time when Christmas gets closer, but flooding the stores in October is just leading to the Christmas season starting in October. Wait and shop in December like a normal person.
