Corporations should give back

It is always nice when large corporations give back to their communities. Two local groups recently received some major financial support from large companies working in the area.

It is always nice when large corporations give back to their communities. Two local groups recently received some major financial support from large companies working in the area.

Cenovus Energy contributed $350,000 to a new project the Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (LCFASD) is developing.

The project is the first of its kind in Alberta, offering women struggling with addiction a place to stay for the duration of their pregnancy and the opportunity to learn life skills, stress management, positive coping skills, and how to deal with their addiction. They will also receive medical, dental, and optical care.

“We've been delighted that Cenovus has seen the importance for a healthy community, a vibrant workforce, and have contributed those dollars to make it happen,” LCFASD executive director Audrey McFarlane told the Nouvelle.

Enbridge Pipelines Inc. also recently stepped up to provide $15,000 for the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) to put towards its goal of a live burn fire training facility.

The BRFA has been raising funds for the project for two years, aiming to raise about $160,000 for the facility, and thanks to the additional $15,000, they are now over halfway there.

“We're looking for more partners to do as Enbridge did and invest in the emergency first responders to help us all collectively make it a safer place,” said BRFA chief Brian McEvoy.

The facility is expected to not only benefit the BRFA, but also fire departments in St. Paul, Lac La Biche, and the rest of the area.

Large corporations making a good buck have a responsibility to give back to the communities that give them so much from natural resources to the work of local employees. Kudos to Cenovus, Enbridge and all the other local companies that realize this and financially donate to many worthwhile community projects and organizations.

Surely these contributions have helped to expedite and make things possible that otherwise might not have materialized. We hope to see these more of these contributions in the future.
