Court verdict a wake up call

Three murderers are behind bars for the cold blooded murder of three family members after a court decision in Kingston, Ontario, last week. A father, wife and son teamed up to execute the man’s three daughters for not living up to a barbaric system of beliefs. The fact that honour killings continue to occur in Canada is a concern for every citizen. The country’s willingness to confront the issue may determine whether we move forward in freedom or backward in time.

In the Shafia case, the murdered daughters were hated by their father for living like any regular Canadian might choose to do, lives of free choice, not indentured to the family’s male guardian like they would have been back in Afghanistan. As the court heard, the victims had turned to social services for help, but social services failed to give the help that was needed.

The guilty verdict last week should be a wake up call for all Canadians that we cannot take our freedom for granted. Canadian and provincial governments also bear some of the blame for not doing more to integrate newcomers into the Canadian way of thinking on freedom. Little despots may want to overturn our freedoms and make us live in their fiefdoms if we don’t set the country straight with some common sense reforms to the immigration and social service systems.

Canada has long been a welcome home for immigrants of many nations and offers the best of everything to anyone who comes. Yet some people betray the trust of the country by failing to leave behind primitive and unacceptable views. Canada’s freedom needs a strong defence, and the best starting point is to let newcomers know barbaric customs won’t be tolerated.
