That special time of year is here when people are in good spirits and wake up early full of childlike joy and excitement. No it's not Christmas morning, it's Chuckwagon time!
The World Professional Chuckwagon Races will descend on the Bonnyville Rodeo Grounds for the fourth annual event this coming weekend, which will surely be more intense and wild than ever with the new changes.
The facility has been renovated to accommodate four teams instead of three on the track. The new infield is now the size of the one at the Calgary Stampede, which has been a goal of the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo and Chuckwagon Association ever since the chuckwagon races hit Bonnyville.
In the past, the races have attracted about 2,500 per day, which is pretty impressive for a town this size, Bonnyville Chuckwagon Committee chair Tina Michaud pointed out. She also reminded us how chuckwagon racing was created in smalltown Alberta.
The Bonnyville Professional Chuckwagon Races will feature all 36 drivers who compete on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association circuit from May until September.
Advance ticket sales for the 2011 races have been solid and remain on sale at the Centennial Centre. Tickets are $15 per day for adults, $10 per day for seniors and students (under 18). All children ages six and under get into the event free of charge.
Gates open at 5 p.m. Thursday to Saturday with races starting at 7:15 p.m. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, with the final day of races commencing at 2:15 p.m.
So whether you are a seasoned fan, curious newbie, or just need something to do this weekend, come on out for a guaranteed wild and hair-raising ride.
Michaud said it best when she called the races “80 seconds of chaos and just an amazing sport to watch live.”
We certainly agree. But if you don't believe us, be sure to find out for yourself.
