After two years behind the sports desk at the St. Paul Journal, the time has come for me to say goodbye.
I recently accepted a position as sports reporter in Medicine Hat, and I will be leaving St. Paul this week to continue following my dream.
When I started out in sports journalism, it was my five-to-10 year goal to land a staff writing position at a daily newspaper covering a Canadian Hockey League team. As the next beat reporter for the Medicine Hat Tigers, I managed to reach that goal in only two years, and I have St. Paul to thank for that.
While I am very excited to move on with the next chapter of my career, it is definitely a bittersweet feeling, as St. Paul has become so much more than just a place to live and work over the past two years. St. Paul has become the place I happily call home, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been an active member of this community ever since I stepped foot here in August of 2012.
I have so many people to thank for helping make these past two years such a success for me - from the athletes and coaches that gave me a reason to look forward to coming to work every day, to my coworkers who have made the St. Paul Journal feel more like a second home than an office. The people I work with have always made me feel like a respected and valued member of this newspaper, and I’m proud to say I started my career right here in St. Paul.
From covering the Lions on back-to-back Wheatland Football League championship runs, to reporting on the turnaround of the St. Paul Canadiens Junior B hockey franchise, to coaching football, baseball and soccer, there’s always been something for me to get excited about every week that I’ve lived in St. Paul.
To all the coworkers, friends, parents, coaches and players that made me feel like so much more than just a reporter in this town, thank you. These past two years have been some of the best in my life. I will carry all that I’ve learned here as a reporter, coach and community member with me for the rest of my life.
Many people remember St. Paul for its landing pad, but I’ll always remember this town as my launching pad. St. Paul has become a part of who I am, and I’ll never forget what it means to call this community home. Thanks St. Paul, it’s been a blast.
