To the Editor:
My frustration with Evergreen continues. I have expressed these very concerns with Evergreen Regional Waste Management Services Commission and the County of St. Paul and Town of St. Paul councils. My frustration will continue until a better understanding of Evergreen is known.
It should come as no surprise that the cost of waste removal has increased and will continue to increase. The interim budget indicates Evergreen will have to increase its tipping fees. What Town of St. Paul Coun. Ken Kwiatkowski did not disclose to town council at its Nov. 8 meeting is the true reasons for the increase. The building of cells is one cost, but operating and administrating are two very important costs as well. It does not surprise me that the Town of St. Paul is frustrated. The Town must understand the landfilling at Evergreen is already above grade, to the point that the air space for cells one and two is, for the most part, used up. It should be noted with cell construction in 2012, the air space for cells three and four will be at about 50 per cent capacity. It is time to take a good look at Evergreen to see if the concerns I have presented in the past are a real issue.
My understanding of the landfill and its health, both financially and environmentally, was not welcomed by those in charge in the past. The concerns I have presented to both municipal councils and Evergreen’s commission are now time tested.
Rob Tomlinson,
County of St. Paul
