Get involved

Recently, I was talking to a new resident who just moved to St. Paul. She was remarking how it can be pretty lonely in a new town when you don’t know anyone here. I find this is a common concern for new people in any small town.

Recently, I was talking to a new resident who just moved to St. Paul. She was remarking how it can be pretty lonely in a new town when you don’t know anyone here. I find this is a common concern for new people in any small town. It’s tough to make friends and tough to develop a social life to replace the one you left.

I invited her to our Lions meeting on the first Thursday of every month. Our service club is a comfortable place to meet new people, learn about important things going on in your new community, and it’s our opportunity to get involved in something important.

Having moved into St. Paul myself, we experienced the transition when we came here from Manitoba. I can say that it was a culture shock but a great experience. We had learned from an earlier move to get involved from day one with church, work, and service clubs.

In 1992, I joined the Lions as a new member. I didn’t know a soul there but I got involved in one or two projects right away. Working with the other members on projects offers a chance to connect with people and make quick friends.

I tell you this story because at this time of the year, when everyone is busy with the Christmas season, it is particularly difficult for new people in our community. Often, new folks leave their families to come for work, or to join their spouses.

To my fellow St. Paul residents, make sure you welcome people you have never met - they could be your future best friends. To those new folks who want to get to know people, our local Lions Club will welcome you. Our next meeting is Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m at the Lions’ Den and it’s our New Members’ Night. We have supper and it is free. If you’re interested, feel free to give me a call at 780-645-3661. If you know a Lions member, then you are very welcome to come with them.

Have a very Merry Christmas.
