Getting older and out of touch

Lately I feel a little out of tune with pop culture. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m getting older, or maybe it’s a sign that I’m too busy to pay attention or care, but I often find myself wondering how I can be so clueless about certain things.

Lately I feel a little out of tune with pop culture. Maybe it’s a sign that I’m getting older, or maybe it’s a sign that I’m too busy to pay attention or care, but I often find myself wondering how I can be so clueless about certain things.

Having a family, plus working two jobs results is a pretty busy lifestyle. Add in a couple exercise classes per week, a couple monthly trips to the city, and I rarely find time to just sit down and watch TV. Come to think of it, I haven’t even gone grocery shopping in quite a while.

Let’s start with movies. Still to this day, I have yet to watch any of the Twilight series. I guess I just don’t get what’s so appealing about having a vampire’s baby. And I don’t get how women get so swept away in these so-called romance stories.

More recently, there’s this whole Hunger Games fiasco going on. I actually wasn’t sure if it was a TV show or a movie at first, but I did figure out (without too much effort) that it’s based on some pretty popular books and that Taylor Swift sings one of the songs on the soundtrack, which helped me figure out it was in fact a movie, or a series of movies if you want to be specific.

And thank you Google for confirming this to me. Sadly, I don’t even have time to immerse myself into a good book lately, so I will probably be left in the dark for a little while longer about the Hunger Games.

Music also often makes me feel like I’m just not in touch with pop culture anymore. I go through phases where I enjoy new music, but then I find myself disliking every new song that comes out.

I just don’t get you Skrillex and I’d much rather listen to music from my own high school years.

This weekend I was invited to go to a bridal show/stagette for a long-time friend. Now, I sort of use my hectic working mom/wife schedule as an excuse on why I never go out, but again, I really don’t see the allure of going to a bar. I guess I’m just boring.

But, I was excited to go out this time because of the circumstances and who I’d be going with. When I was notified of the “dress code,” I will admit I was kind of baffled. I had already been wondering about what I would wear, since my usual yoga pants/sweater and Puma runners probably wouldn’t be appropriate attire (actually, my husband doesn’t think yoga pants are ever appropriate unless I’m actually doing yoga).

And since I’m writing this column on Friday, I have yet to decide what to wear to that stagette and I’m pretty sure nothing in my wardrobe qualifies as suitable bar apparel. Looking back 10 years, I would have never anticipated that by the time I was 26 I’d still be able to count the number of times I’ve been to a bar on two hands.

Honestly, I love it. Going home to two snotty nosed little boys and a husband who still plays video games at nearly 30 years old really is my idea of a perfect Friday night, and I’m not being sarcastic. My only issue is choosing what music to listen to on the drive home from work.
