The Nouvelle has a new reporter!
Hi, my name is Andrew Mendler and I will be covering anything and everything Bonnyville has to offer.
I come to Alberta from the small town of Tillsonburg, Ontario, where I spent my entire childhood and teenage years.
Hmmm…Tillsonburg. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
If so, you've probably heard of the song “Tillsonburg” by Stompin' Tom Connors (the man who also sang “The Hockey Song”).
Anyway, I guess I should say a little bit about myself.
After graduating high school I set out for the city of Belleville and spent four years studying Journalism at Loyalist College.
During my time in Belleville I got a lot of experience across a variety of media platforms. I wrote for the school paper, read the news on the college's radio station, worked as the audio operator for the Belleville Bulls (OHL) hockey club and called play-by-play for the Jr. A Trenton Golden Hawks online broadcasts.
Yes, most of my experience has something to do with sports. You see there came a sad day in my life when I realized I wasn't very good at sports. So I thought the next best thing would be to report on them.
My greatest experience came last spring, when I interned at The Hockey News magazine in Toronto. I got to attend a couple Maple Leafs games, sit in the press box and interview several NHL players.
But, I'll have you know that I'm not just all about sports. I find my love of journalism comes from not knowing what you're going to get on a day-to-day basis. It doesn't matter the topic. Every day I will be meeting new people, covering new stories and learning new things.
As I was always told, there are no boring stories, only boring storytellers. So if you ever read one of my stories and find it boring, let me know. I can be reached by phone at 780-826-3876 ext. 106 or by email at [email protected]
