In just a few days there were at least three reported ATV-related accidents in the Lakeland area – and sadly, there were likely more.
Despite repeated urges by those working in emergency services and other safety-related fields, Albertans continue to use ATVs unsafely and without the proper gear. In late June, it was reported in media outlets that serious ATV accidents were on the rise in Alberta – this fact is clearly the case, following the reports received last week.
In each of the three reported incidences in the Lakeland in early July, none of the drivers of the ATVs were wearing helmets. The fact that helmets can save lives and prevent injuries when worn is undisputable.
Alberta continues to lack any type of legislation requiring ATV users to wear helmets. There is legislation in place that requires youth to wear helmets while they ride a bike down a road, but ATV safety continues to be ignored.
Helmet safety extends beyond ATVs. It’s a common sight to see adults riding bikes without helmets in the area. Many times those adults are riding alongside their helmet-wearing children. The best way to teach children about safety is to practice safety as adults.
With the warm weather set to stick around for a couple more months still, locals need to give their heads a shake and put on a helmet when taking their ATV out for a spin, or when going out for an evening bike ride with their children.
