Parking space near the Clancy Richard Arena was sparse on Saturday night, and the home side of the arena stands was filled with loud and lively fans, cheering on the local Jr. B hockey team.
Watching the community rally behind its highest level of hockey on a cold February night offers a unique type of warmth and excitement.
Throughout the years, the St. Paul Jr. B Canadiens’ club has seen its ups and downs. This year, residents and especially hockey players and coaches, can be proud to say the team is on an upswing.
Over the past few years, a lot of hard work has undoubtedly been done behind the scenes, and on the ice, by the countless individuals involved in rejuvenating Jr. B hockey in St. Paul. It wasn’t that long ago that the stands were nearly bare, and a shot at the playoffs was nowhere in sight.
This season marked the team’s first playoff win in nine years, and that win has since been followed up by two more wins. It’s amazing how some success, hard work, and an arena filled with supporters can bring a team back from the bottom of the standings, to a strong contender within the league.
Tonight, the Jr. B Canadiens will lace up their skates at the Clancy, and face off against the Lloydminster Bandits in Game 7 of a best of seven series. Win or lose, the team has undoubtedly proven itself this season. No matter the outcome, it’s safe to say Jr. B hockey is back.
