I'll be home for Christmas

I’m fortunate enough to have got enough time off around Christmas to fly home, and I’m counting down the days until my holidays start.

Once we finish up the Dec. 21 edition, I’ll be blasting Christmas tunes on my way to Edmonton to catch my flight back to Ontario.

Most of the events I’ve covered over the course of December have instilled the Christmas spirit in me, but it’s also made me miss home terribly.

It’s my mom’s love for the holiday that has me enjoying this time of the year so much, and I was disappointed to miss out on some of our holiday traditions.

This was the first year I didn’t beg to put the Christmas tree up in November, and I actually hoped my family would have put off decorating until I got home.

I was a little disappointed when my mom sent me a photo of the Christmas tree mostly decorated, though she didn’t finish it all. I joked that I would finish it once I got back, and she said the ornaments would be waiting for me.

I didn’t get to watch my favourite movies and television specials with my family, or bring my brother to the mall to do some shopping.

I haven’t even started my actual Christmas shopping yet, and I’m normally done long before the countdown to Dec. 25 gets to the single digits.

I can’t express my thanks enough to Kristen (the publisher) and Meagan (the editor) for giving me the time off to go home, and the advice to book my flight as soon as I could before the prices jumped too high.

While I’m very excited to get home for the holidays, I’m more looking forward to seeing friends and family I’ve been missing.

I can’t wait to catch up, share my adventures since I moved out here, and make some memories to last me until my next trip home.

This is my first time flying around Christmas time, and the prospect is a little daunting. Leaving my car for such a long time has me worried, but my excitement of going home outweighs any of the negatives that have popped up.

I want to take this time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Safe travels if you are visiting family, and enjoy your time with loved ones this year. If you’re drinking, please figure out a safe way home.
