To the Editor:
The article in the Aug. 28 St. Paul Journal titled, ‘Wildrose MLA challenges secrecy on prohibited donations,’ was full of disturbing information.
First of all, why are our county and town spending our money illegally? Do they know the rules? From my understanding, the money these councils have access to belongs to the ratepayers and should be going to benefit our town and county, not to support political parties, which is ridiculous since not all ratepayers support the same party.
Then the town had the nerve to block giving out information regarding these illegal donations they made and the fines they were given. The town’s CAO was even bold enough to state, as quoted in the paper, “If we don’t have to disclose it, we don’t.” Seriously? Perhaps the council members need to remember that they work for the ratepayers and therefore, should be more than willing to share all information when requested. There should be no need for secrecy. It makes me wonder what else is going on that we haven’t found out about yet.
Now that the town and county face fines for these illegal donations, I wonder who will end up paying them. I sure hope it is not the ratepayers’ money that will be abused again! The people who decided to make these illegal donations should step up and pay the fines from their own pocket.
