Last Monday (Jan. 14) I was foruntate enough to speak to a local class about one of my biggest passions: journalism.

In preparation for the Provincial Achievement Test (PAT), I was asked to make a presentation to Krista Bernard’s Grade 6 class at Dr. Bernard Brosseau School.

This is something I have been happy to do in the past, and because of my previous experience, felt pretty well prepared.

I spent the better part of Friday afternoon pulling together my little project for the students, and event mapped out the gist of our dscussion.

I was surprised by how well behaved the students were, they paid attention, asked questions, and did the activity I had brought along.

When I told them about some of the amazing opportunities I have had thanks to my job, I could see I was inspiring some of those kids, which is something I strive to do.

Journalism isn’t always seen as a “big and shiny” career path.

In fact, I’m pretty sure there were a few people who tried to talk me out of it, but there was no stopping me once I set my mind to it.

That’s why when I get the chance, I share all of the wonderful things about being a reporter, like interviewing bands, covering concerts and events, and occassionally riding in a T22 jet.

Sure, it’s not all butterflies, rainbows, and roses, but it’s a career that I have found to be very rewarding.

I hope I inspired at least one student to consider journalism, because if I did, well I’ve helped set them on a path they will never regret.
