Just had to play

It has now been two months of inundating myself in the local sports scene. Sports have become my life; they have taken over my dreams. But there was one problem: I was only reporting on them, not playing them.

It has now been two months of inundating myself in the local sports scene. Sports have become my life; they have taken over my dreams. But there was one problem: I was only reporting on them, not playing them. I couldn't take it anymore; I just had to play something.

With winter on the horizon, my choice of sports to play was limited. I was unable to play my favourite sport, rec-league slo-pitch, so I resorted to the next best thing: rec-league hockey. I have joined a league called the Old-timers Masters.

I am neither an old-timer, nor a master; however, I am a huge hockey fan and have been playing it in some form since the age of five.

In fact, like many Canadian kids, I played minor hockey for my entire childhood. I have also played a bit of rec-hockey in college. But, my love for hockey has always been the fun of playing the game, not the competitiveness. That is not to say that I am opposed to competitive hockey. But my skills, or lack there of, limit me to playing in rec-leagues, and writing about the competitive ones.

So I'll stick to writing about the Pontiacs and their impressive seven-game winning streak. And to get my sports-fix of actually playing, I will hit the ice once a week with men and women, ranging in age from 25 to 65, and all just out there to enjoy it.

The first game of the season was a rough one for a few of us out there. It will take a bit to get our legs under us and shake the rust off, as they say. But that's the beauty of a league like this. It is conducive to shaking off the proverbial rust. And a few pops after the game can only help.
