It can be considered a cliché to describe your dad as a man of few words, but that is what exactly what my father is.
Over the years I have had some great mother-son talks that have allowed me to learn important lessons on how to show respect for your self and others, having a positive outlook in life and being patient among many things.
I have learned more from my father through watching his actions. This is a guy who has owned and operated three successful businesses. He started up a Shop Easy Grocery Store in Biggar SK and a Dollar Store Plus and Brooks, Alta and he successfully took over operating a Tim Hortons with my Mom.
He was able to foster productive and respectful businesses through his work ethic. I have never encountered anyone in my life that approaches every work task with the same gusto as my father does. He is a guy that wakes up 4:30 a.m. six mornings a week to head to work. He unloads trucks, serves people their food, fills out supply orders and many other tasks throughout the course of a day. While owning a Tim Hortons has many challenges, the goal of creating a good life for my Mom, my two younger sisters and myself keeps him going. I like to think I have inherited this quality from him.
My Dad is stubborn, in a good way. He refuses to let any challenge overcome him. He simply finds a way to get the job done. My teachers and parents have both commended my perseverance level. I owe that to him.
My Dad is a dreamer. When he was young he wished to create a strong family, and own a business to support his family. He constantly empowers my sisters and I to find a path that will make us happy.
My Dad is very kind to the people he encounters. He is a person that others want to be around because he has been gifted with a great sense of humour. Even though I am rarely impressed with any of the jokes he tells (I am a bit tough to get a laugh out of), I appreciate his light-heartedness.
I am blessed to have ended up with the father I have. You hear stories from others you encounter about how they have been brought up by unsupportive and abusive parents, and I just have to thank God that I didn’t have to deal with this form of adversity. My parents have had my back for my first 23 years, and they will be my greatest champions for the rest of their lives.
I love you Dad and Mom. Happy Father’s Day.
