While the days are getting drastically shorter and temperatures are dropping, one of my favourite things about winter is the snow.
It reminds me of when I was a kid, and I would spend hours playing outside with my friends in the cold.
Currently, I love to curl-up with a blanket and a book beside the window to watch the snow fall.
My mom would always set the Christmas tree up in front of the window, so she could enjoy the view whenever a blizzard hit.
We didn’t have as much snow as I would have liked back home, which gave me the dream of moving somewhere that received an abundance of it at some point.
When I first moved here, everyone I spoke to warned me about the winters.

While the cold is daunting, still not sure how I’m going to deal with that, but I was excited about the snow.
I was still surprised when I woke up Thanksgiving weekend to see snow outside, but I was happy about it.
Although I love snow, when I started driving my affection for it faltered slightly.
Roads I’d grown familiar with disappeared under the white stuff, and I suddenly had to be extra aware of the other drivers around me.
I’m normally a cautious person behind the wheel anyways, but I’m always extra alert when there’s a fresh snowfall.
I’ve had a few issues in the past on winter roads, but it’s barely a month in and I’ve almost got stuck here numerous times.
Last week, there was a snowstorm back in my hometown.
A few people sent me photos and videos, and I actually laughed a bit when I saw them.
They were getting the amount of snow we got out here on Thanksgiving, and some people were complaining about it.
I never understood people that complained when the rain turned into snow, mainly because of where we live.
A majority of our year is spent in the colder months, and, for me, snow is a bonus to make those times not seem so bad.
It’s just the beginning of winter, and I’m only slightly dreading the first one I spend in Alberta.
Maybe my time here will turn me against my favourite season, or it might encourage it.
Whatever the result is, right now I still smile when I look out the window and see snow clouds.
