Letter from former Editor on Danyluk

Non-conservative, ex-St. Paul resident praises Danyluk's local work.

A few weeks ago, the editor of the St. Paul Journal wrote an impassioned editorial about the danger of vague and abstract language in our political discussions. As a former editor of the Journal, I appreciate his concerns. But personally, I'm a lot more worried about the simplistic language that has taken over Alberta politics in recent days. Overheated charges that government is out to deny people their "rights.” Partisan attacks on people's "love” for their province. It's hard not to get caught up emotionally in all of this. But it's our responsibility not to do so – because if we don't think clearly, we might be inclined to cast a vote against a candidate who deserves our support. I'm writing this letter because I feel that in your riding, Ray Danyluk is that candidate. He is, as you know, a decent, honest, and extremely capable MLA. In fact, in my years as a journalist in the constituency, I never met an elected official who worked harder or was more trustworthy. In light of his character and his immense contributions to the constituency, Ray deserves another term as MLA. I know the vast majority of people in the riding will agree with me – and I hope that they will act on it. People might wonder why I took the time to write this letter, given that I don't live in the constituency anymore. It's certainly not at Ray's behest; I'm not even a Conservative. It's just that…well, I know Ray Danyluk's strengths, and that's reason enough to write. You know them too, and that's reason enough to vote for him. Rob Desjardins Edmonton
