As a huge sports fan, fall is probably my favourite time of the year. The football season has kicked off and hockey is right around the corner.
As a huge sports fan, fall is probably my favourite time of the year. The football season has kicked off and hockey is right around the corner.
The days may be getting shorter, but the weekends are certainly getting busier, spending most of my time at the local field and the rink, but I don't mind. I love covering sports, no mater how big or small the game is.
Bonnyville has a lot going on in the amateur sports scene, with a ton of hockey to choose from, amateur football and an array of other sports to follow as the leaves start to change before the snow starts to fly.
Just this past weekend in town, the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs kicked off the home portion of their schedule on Friday night at the RJ Lalonde Arena with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Lloydminster Bobcats. Then on Saturday afternoon the Bonnyville Renegades peewee football team played to a tough 14-14 tie with the Wainwright Guard Dogs at Walsh Field.
This coming weekend will also be jam-packed with action.
The Bonnyville Bandits bantam football squad will play their first home game of the season against their rival St. Paul Bengals on Saturday at 1p.m. Then at 7:30 p.m. the Jr. A Pontiacs will be back in action hosting the Grande Prairie Storm.
Both Friday and Saturday will see BCHS packed as the school hosts their annual Roadrunners home volleyball tournament.
The weekend will be a warm-up for Sept. 27 when all three local football teams will take the field for the annual Scott MacDonald Memorial games. The Bonnyville Amateur Football Association uses the day as a way to raise money for cancer research, and also donates a portion of the funds raised to the local hospital and towards post-secondary scholarships.
Once October roles around fans in the region will have even more to cheer about, as the Sr. Pontiacs will end their seven-year hiatus and get back on the ice for a 20-game season in the Battle River Hockey League, while the minor hockey season will also get underway.
As much as I will be covering the Jr. and Sr. Pontiacs over the course of the season, I will also ensure the minor teams are covered.
I will be starting up a section for the Minor Hockey Game of the Week, where I will chose one local minor hockey team, attend their game and write up a full game story complete with photos. My goal would be to cover a different minor game every week, featuring the local team in the paper.
So, if you're a coach or a parent and have a team that needs to be covered, no mater how big or small, just send me an email and I will see if I can work a game into my schedule. Who knows, maybe it could be the Game of the Week.
