Making hay, or travel memories, when the sun shines

Now that we’re in the thick of spring and those, lazy, hazy days of summer are fast approaching, it’s time to get out of the house and explore our beautiful natural surroundings.

That is what I have been doing for the past month or so, first spending a day in Fort Saskatchewan exploring the local parks and historic sites. Then, I went on a trip down memory lane a couple of weeks later when I drove to Vermilion, a town where I had lived for nearly three years before moving back to the Maritimes in September 2009.

But what is without a doubt the most memorable day-trip I embarked on recently was when I headed down to Drumheller a few weeks back, driving through canyon and semiarid areas. While there are so many amazing sights to take in around the Drumheller area, Horse Thief Canyon, a massive natural wonder that appears as though it is the backdrop for a Western movie, is simply breathtaking.

While in that part of our province, I also visited Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, which is a cross between a semi-desert region and a forest.

Before the summer is over and the short, cold days return, I intend to see other areas of Alberta, and even Western Canada.

Because the summer season is so short in Canada, we almost have an obligation, especially because of our love/hate relationship with winter, to make the most out of these warm months.

While that may also involve soaking up the sun at local lakes - or the ocean if you happen to make a trip to beautiful Prince Edward Island (my home province) - I would encourage you to get out on the open road and see what our country has to offer.

As the old expression goes, ‘Make hay when the sun shines.’
