More than enough to be grateful for

By the time this newspaper hits the stands, the year that was 2015 will be all wrapped up, and we will already have experienced the first few days of 2016. From a news standpoint, 2015 was a year that will certainly be remembered.

By the time this newspaper hits the stands, the year that was 2015 will be all wrapped up, and we will already have experienced the first few days of 2016.

From a news standpoint, 2015 was a year that will certainly be remembered. Politically, the Canadian and Alberta governments shifted, much to the surprise of many, although maybe not to the surprise of those who clearly supported change.

The economy began to wobble, and the year proved to be a hard one economically for many people across Alberta.

Globally, the news that dominated the headlines was often bleak. A civil war continues to rage on in the Middle East and millions of people are fleeing the war-torn countries that have been deeply affected. Canada has accepted some of those refugees, which has often posed discussion and at times harsh disagreement among Canadians.

Extreme weather has also ripped families and communities apart, and the talk of climate change continues to be heard.

Despite the heartbreaking stories that often seem to have dominated headlines in 2015, there have been many that have also made me shed a tear or two, and reaffirmed my belief that despite war, disagreements, and disasters, there is still a lot of good in the world. All these stories have also made me appreciate my home, my country, and my family that much more.

On a more personal note, 2015 has been a year of living in limbo for our family. Although there has been much excitement with building a new house, if I’m being honest, living in someone else’s space and watching the sometimes slow progress that comes along with such a large project, can be a challenge.

Thankfully, our boys don’t seem to have minded too much. For the past year, they’ve enjoyed spending time with their grandparents daily, and having their uncle to tease has resulted in lots of giggles.

As adults though, it’s been interesting going from having our own well established home, to selling that home and for the second time in our lives, starting the process over again.

Our 2015 has included enough bank and lawyer appointments, paint swatches, and faucet choices to keep me satisfied for many years to come. Our project is now nearing completion, although later than originally anticipated.

The New Year will begin with much of the same – paint colours, baseboards, and paying bills, but that is certainly not something to complain about. The work will be worth the effort. Having a brand new house, space to grow a garden, and more than enough room to eat, sleep and live is something I am more than grateful for, and look forward to enjoying in the year ahead.
