More than just a room of books

When I heard the news that the province was weighing whether or not to provide the remaining half of funding for libraries across the province, just like the money coming into these vital services, I froze.

My love of books started when I was young, and a big part of that is because of the library.

It started with the towering stacks of picture books at my elementary school and grew into the overflowing shelves of the local library in high school.

I never stopped going to the library.

In fact, I continue to use it today.

I grin when I see my paper receipt, which is really supposed to remind you of the due date more than anything, because it also tells me how much I’ve saved by using the library.

But it’s not just about the books.

Libraries have endless amounts of programming for families, high school students, and adults.

Whether you’re looking to improve your resume writing skills, or you want to join the book club, the world opens up to you at the library.

I don’t know who I would be if it hadn’t been for the rows of books that surrounded me throughout my childhood.

Sure, it all started with Little Miss Spider and Strawberry Shortcake.

The library is what got me hooked on writing and telling stories.

I hope the province takes a minute to consider the lives they will impact. Because a library is so much more than a room of books. It’s where imagination comes to life, where time travel is possible, and where learning never stops.
