Movie season is upon us

While most people are looking forward to summer for the warmer weather, I’m looking forward to the prospect of movie season being upon us.

The blockbuster hits are coming out in the next couple of months, and I can’t wait to spend some time in the theatre catching up with what my favourite fictional characters have been up to.

While great movies have been coming out since January, I find March is when the really anticipated movies begin to hit theatres. Captain Marvel came out this past weekend, Shazam hits theatres in April, and the new Avengers will be sure to break our hearts next month.

I’ll also be able to revisit my childhood when the live action versions of Aladdin and the Lion King are released, along with Toy Story 4. Yes, I’m an adult who’s going to be sitting to watch children movies, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

Going to the movies is one of my favourite activities to do no matter the season, and I’ve always been a fan of the cinema. If I hadn’t gone into journalism, I would have tried to enter that field instead. I love watching the stories unfold on the big screen, almost as much as I enjoy sitting down and reading a book.

Growing up, my grandma worked as a projectionist and often would snag us movie posters. My childhood walls were plastered with them, even if I wasn’t a particular fan of whichever film it was displaying. I enjoyed having them up so much, I didn’t take them down until I switched rooms well into my 20s.

While I’m not a huge fan of eating it, I love walking into a cinema and smelling popcorn. Overhearing the conversations of people excited about what they’re about to see, and just having a good time adds to the whole experience.

The only drawback about going to the show, which is what my parents call it, is when there are people who talk or disrupt the film for others in the audience. Please, put your phones away, be quiet, and let everyone enjoy the experience. That may sound like the plea played before most movies, but it’s a really important matter for some.

With the rising cost of going out to enjoy the cinema, I find it incredibly rude to loudly chat with the person next to you or to take your phone out to check what’s happening on social media. It should be able to wait until the credits are rolling, or if it’s important enough, then take it outside.

I can’t wait for what this year has in store for new movies, and I hope everyone has a great experience when they choose to go.
