New beginnings in 2012

The new year is a time of potential for the people of St. Paul and the surrounding region. In just a few days, families, seniors and young and old alike will gather to count down to 2012 and celebrate the beginning of the new year.

The new year is a time of potential for the people of St. Paul and the surrounding region. In just a few days, families, seniors and young and old alike will gather to count down to 2012 and celebrate the beginning of the new year.

Already we see the signs of newness in the community with the St. Paul Junior B Canadiens overcoming a difficult stretch to win its third game of the year on Dec. 21. The win is a sign of what is to come in 2012 with a stronger and rebuilt team. While we do not yet know the outcome of Friday’s rematch against the Titans in St. Paul, the Canadiens have blown last year’s record out of the water, something the community can be proud of.

Other athletics in the town and surrounding areas are gearing up for successful seasons. The Peewee A Canadiens will represent all of Zone 7 at the Alberta Winter Games after an epic, three-series victory and a final game, double overtime win to secure the spot. While the Games will be a new challenge, the peewee A’s look like they’re up to the task. Also going to the Games will be two local figure skaters to represent the region.

Local basketball teams are shaping up for a good 2012 after the start of league play. 2012 will give the community new Bengals and Lions football recruits, which will help fight the good fight once again when the snow thaws.

2012 will be a new beginning of sorts for the newsroom here at the Journal. The Journal is saying goodbye to long-time sports reporter and former editor Janice Huser in the new year. Readers will surely miss her valuable writing and photography contributions, but we wish her the best in her new endeavours.

Two new reporters will be joining the newsroom in 2012. We hope the community will treat our new reporters with the same respect the newsroom has received from the great community of St. Paul and area.
