Nights are getting longer

Yes, the baseball, golf and outdoor soccer seasons are coming to an end and the nights are starting to get a little longer, as the cool fall breeze begins to blow in.

Yes, the baseball, golf and outdoor soccer seasons are coming to an end and the nights are starting to get a little longer, as the cool fall breeze begins to blow in. But no need to fret, Lakeland sports fans, there is plenty to watch and take part in throughout the fall and winter months right here in the region.

Let's not beat around the bush. Another Jr. A Pontiacs season is upon us and the town is certainly getting geared up for another run at the AJHL championship. Last season ended a bit abruptly, but through camp and exhibition play, the team is looking skilled, strong and exciting to watch.

There is also the Cold Lake Jr. B Ice, who is in search of an unprecedented fourth straight league championship.

If that is not enough hockey for you, there is always minor hockey happening almost every weekend at the Centennial Centre.

Perhaps hockey is not your thing. Well, why not watch some local football? The Bonnyville Voyageurs kicked off the regular season Friday night at Walsh Field, while the bantam Bandits will hit the field in search of a third straight league title Sept. 7 in Lloyd, with the home opener coming a week later at Walsh Field. And kicking off the inaugural season will be the Bonnyville peewee Renegades, with the home opener scheduled for Sept. 8.

The other kind of football – soccer, the indoor type – will kick into gear next month, as the local squads look to surpass the superb seasons put together by many of Bonnyville's outdoor teams this summer.

And if junior hockey or minor sports aren't your thing, why not look into some of the many school sports underway already, as the 2013-14 school year gets started?

As the weather cools and summer unofficially comes to an end this week, don't get down. Get out there and enjoy some sports!
