Paying tribute

Remembrance Day is a time to put aside political stripes and to honour and pay respect to those who not only fought for our country, but for anyone around the world who made sacrifices to contribute the freedoms we enjoy today.

Remembrance Day is a time to put aside political stripes and to honour and pay respect to those who not only fought for our country, but for anyone around the world who made sacrifices to contribute the freedoms we enjoy today. So many lives were lost as nations were shattered and families were torn apart. It can perhaps be unsettling to recall the horror and atrocities people involved in war experienced, but nevertheless, a reminder to be grateful for what we have today.

While considering how lucky we are to live in this country, we should consider those around the world who do not experience the same freedoms we often take for granted. Countless numbers of people suffer around the world in various conflicts, and in countries where their governments do not protect their basic human rights let alone the freedoms we enjoy.

The Nouvelle was fortunate enough to meet several war heroes for our special Remembrance Day section. We hope their stories will impact our readers the way they have touched us, and serve as a reminder of the great sacrifices made. We recognize how important it is to share these stories and pass them down through generations. Their contributions must never be forgotten.

Remembering those who have died fighting for something they believe in, or as a casualty of conflict, and repeating their stories help to immortalize their sacrifices. Their legacy can live on, long after they have passed.

As time wears on, fewer veterans from the World Wars will remain to share their stories. If you know someone who served their country, encourage them to share their story. Future generations must inherit and keep up the duty of remembering and honouring these sacrifices. It is the least we can do after all that has been done for us.
