The sun is shining, the tunes are on, windows are down, and you have nothing ahead of you but the open road.
This might tempt you to put a little more pressure on the pedal, creep your speed just a tiny bit higher. But please, don’t.
Summer. It’s a time of year where drivers can sometimes feel fearless. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Whether the weather is on your side or the roads are completely bare, safety should always be your top concern.
Even when the highway is free from oncoming traffic, and there is not a rain cloud in sight, your attention needs to be on the road, because there are other hazards than just road conditions and other drivers.
Wildlife is a big one.
Livestock is another.
By cutting back a little bit on your speed, you give yourself just that extra second of reaction time, which can mean a world of a difference, just ask any driving instructor.
As usual, the RCMP will be on the lookout for speed demons, distracted drivers, and anyone behind the wheel impaired.
If you’re on the road, you should really be considerate of all three.
Keep your speed to an acceptable level. This isn’t only for your safety, but also the safety of others.
Put down your phone, because we all know that the consequences can be more than just a fine and some demerits.
We should all know by now that drinking and driving isn’t okay. Never. With outside barbecues, nights around the bonfire, and other social events, there are lots of people enjoying an alcoholic beverage or two. But what we all should be doing, is pre-planning. Whether that comes in the form of a designated driver, cab, or a friend who is willing to give you a lift, there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired.
We all want to enjoy our summer, and with the sun finally making an appearance, it’s important to take it easy, slow down, and enjoy each day while it lasts.
