You don’t have to jump on a plane to experience another culture, or another way of life. There are several events in our community that showcase cultural diversity, and the Saddle Lake powwow is certainly one great example of such an event.
This weekend, Saddle Lake powwow days will once again be taking place, drawing thousands of people from the local area and even beyond, with dancers from across the country converging in the powwow grounds from Friday to Sunday.
The music, dancing, food and crafts celebrate First Nations culture, and offer a totally unique experience, while the colourful regalia of the dancers are a feast for the eyes. In fact, for someone from outside the community, it really feels as though one has entered a different country altogether during this event.
Saddle Lake has been hit with a few unfortunate events in the past month, including a student’s death in a car accident and the destruction and vandalism of the school and band office. Hopefully, this year’s powwow offers the people of Saddle Lake a chance to celebrate something positive and to find a way to look forward to their future. It will certainly offer the people outside of the community to experience the powerful heart and tradition of First Nations culture and it is well worth their time to attend.
