Private security is a bad idea

I do also wish to bring up something that was posted by the St. Paul Journal.

I do also wish to bring up something that was posted by the St. Paul Journal. The post was pertaining to an idea to hire a private security company to monitor the town during evening hours, and I can’t possibly stress enough how the enactment of this idea would be in the absolute worst interest of all citizens and the town itself.

When crime prevention (whether policing or imprisonment) is privatized, crime itself becomes a necessary commodity for that private company to thrive and for shareholders to see profits. It is guaranteed that ‘crime’ will absolutely increase with any private security in order for the company to justify their cost, even if it means arresting innocent persons on bogus and trumped-up ‘charges’. As well, the sudden jump in crime will be definitely be used as justification for requesting more power, more jurisdiction, and even more of our tax dollars. Such an enactment will also most definitely be met with constitutional challenges and other legal costs. The total expenses and costs to enact this horrible idea would far exceed the $90,000.00 charged by the private company.

Such a ridiculous proposal could only be followed up by an equally ridiculous contract seeking to bind the town for years while allowing for increases in funding; $90,000 one year could easily turn into $1,000,000 the next, and if the town doesn’t like it, the company sues for breach of contract.)

It is a very slippery-slope to embracing dangerous American style policing policy for the financial profit of the very few. The US has been doing this for many years and it is definitely not in the best interest of any Canadian. The RCMP are more than capable of fulfilling their mandate without private outsourcing.

I truly hope that these concerns will be taken into serious consideration with regard to this extremely dangerous proposal.

Warm regards,

Stephen Witteveen
