Salute to agriculture

This week, the Journal includes a special section devoted to agriculture stories from this region’s most important sector. We salute the efforts of the agricultural producers, who, having faced tough economic times, continue to show resiliency and strength in improving conditions for the agricultural industry and by extension, the entire region.

Reports in this week’s special section indicate a strong year ahead for all sectors of the agricultural industry including livestock, grains, and oilseeds. After a year of good moisture levels, it’s about time things start going well for farmers.

Of course, agriculture is like shooting at a moving target, as results are dependent on numerous factors, most importantly, the weather. The weather can make or break any farming operation, and there is no full proof way to guard against possible catastrophes, from wind or hail, flooding, drought, tornados or an early frost. Yet, for the most part, farmers seem to be able to navigate the difficult waters of weather management, a testament to their expertise, knowledge and skill.

In this area, so much depends on the agricultural industry, and if farmers are hurting, the chances are things hurt in town too. It’s the farmers that make this region what it is, and this region would certainly not have the opportunities it does if not for a strong agricultural sector.

Many new people are relocating to St. Paul and area, at least in part due to the thriving economy. While oil and gas play a part in that economy, an important part, it’s the farmers who continue producing crops and cattle year after year, even if there has been an economic bust and investment in the oil and gas sectors plunge like it did in recent years. Forecasts indicate growing investment in oil and gas in the area. With the Town and County in the right place at the right time, the entire area is poised for an economic boom.
